Launch of the Living Without Plastic film!

The film documents The Plastic Detox (Plastbantarna) project conducted by KTH in the REDUCE project. It premiered at the production company Cinelandia on 21. April 2026.

The big question in the film is: Can you live a good everyday life without plastic?

In an unusual experiment, KTH researchers empty the Hesse family’s home—only to rebuild it again, this time almost completely without plastic. For one month, the family will use objects made of wood, metal, glass, wool, and ceramics.

The aim of the experiment is to make visible and document how much plastic a typical family with children has in their home in 2025, and to explore which products can be replaced with plastic-free alternatives. Below you can see how the researchers carried out the project.

The REDUCE project investigates how the consumption of plastic products in everyday life can be reduced. The project is led by OsloMet University. KTH Green Leap is responsible for a work package on future scenarios and everyday experiments. The results of the experiment will be shown in films and exhibitions in Sweden and Norway. The goal of this experiment is to make visible all the plastic we have in our homes, explore what alternatives exist and what is missing, and examine the consequences of a plastic-free life in everyday routines.
