REDUCE – rethinking everyday plastics
The REDUCE project looks at plastic in a systems perspective and investigates how the consumption of plastic products in everyday life can be reduced. The project focuses on three consumption areas where a lot of plastic is used: hygiene products, leisure products and products related to childhood, such as toys.
In this film project manager Marie Hebrok, SIFO, introduces the project.
Why is it so hard to reduce plastic?
The REDUCE project looks at plastic in a systems perspective and investigates how the consumption of plastic products in everyday life can be reduced. In this film project members are gathered at a workshop discussing preliminary results. REDUCE is financed by Research Council of Norway.

The Plastic Detox (Plastbantarna)
In an unusual experiment, KTH researchers empty the Hesse family’s home—only to rebuild it again, this time almost completely without plastic. For one month, the family will use objects made of wood, metal, glass, wool, and ceramics. The aim of the experiment is to make visible and document how much plastic a typical family with children has in their home in 2025, and to explore which products can be replaced with plastic-free alternatives. Below you can see how the researchers carried out the project. More here.
